Sunday January 22nd at 11:17 PM High Point Fire District along with Pageland Fire Department and First Health EMS responded to a structure fire on Airport Road in Pageland and discovered a mobile home with heavy fire involvement. Neighbors reported there were at least 2 people inside. One team of firefighters advanced a hose line and began battling the fire which involved the front entrance. Another team of firefighters advanced a second hose around the back trying to find another way inside to begin rescue operations. Once the back door was forced opened it became obvious that the conditions throughout the home were not survivable and rescue operations were halted until the fire could be controlled. Once the fire was brought under control firefighters searched and found two bodies in the home. The mobile home had multiple additions and modifications which hampered fire and rescue operations as well as a large amount of belongings both inside and outside the home. The fire appears to have started in a front addition near a wood burning stove. The home did not have a functioning smoke alarm. “In light of this tragedy I would like to urge everyone to make sure your home has working smoke detectors and that you practice a home escape plan” says High Point Chief Wendell Johnson. The fire is being investigated by the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Department.
