Chicken barn fire

Quick response by firefighters is credited with saving a chicken barn on Smyrna Church Road Friday. High Point fire fighters had just finished participating in an emergency vehicle escort of the Central High Eagles football team to pep rallies at other local schools when the alarm sounded. Normally volunteers have to travel from their homes to the fire stations to get a fire engine and then travel to the fire. When the alarm sounded at noon Friday firefighters were already in their trucks and on the road saving precious minutes. First arriving firefighters found the chicken barn full of smoke with the insulation under the roof burning. The fire was quickly extinguished and fans set up to remove the smoke. The fire appears to have started at the top of a wall where an electrical wire shorted out. The fire traveled up burning the insulation that lies beneath the roof. Early estimates put damages at $25,000.00. All of the barn’s 19000 chickens, which were scheduled for pickup Monday, appeared to have survived.
