Primary funding for the operation of HPFD is provided by dues collected from the residents of our district. Our fire dues are currently set at $35.00 per residence and are collected and disbursed by the Chesterfield County Treasurer. Chesterfield County Council also provides each department in the county $5000.00 to help defray some of the operating expenses incurred. We also apply for grant monies as they become available. Some of the recent successful grant applications include funding received through the FEMA-AFG (Assistance to Firefighters Grant) Program 2002, 2003 and 2004. FEMA-AFG monies have allowed us to purchase much needed personal protective equipment, SCBA (air-packs), fire attack and supply hose, nozzles, firefighter training and public education training materials as well as a thermal imaging camera. We have also received grant money from the SC Forestry Commission to help purchase equipment such as hand-tools, backpack water carriers, hose and nozzles to be used on wildland fire incidents. United Way assistance in recent years has allowed us to purchase equipment such as a ventilation saw and piercing nozzles to allow safer and more effective operations during structure and confined area fires. As you can see, financial support for the
fire service comes from many different sources, but maintaining and operating
any emergency service organization is expensive. Cost for a basic new pumper
with no hose, nozzles, adapters, SCBA or any other fire-fighting equipment
installed begins at around $150,000.00 plus at least $25,000.00 to have just
enough equipment to begin fighting fire. To properly equipment one (1)
firefighter with protective clothing, radio and SCBA will cost nearly $4000.00!
Factor in insurance, truck and equipment repair and maintenance, fuel and
utility costs and you can quickly see that the fire service is big business. Listed in no particular order.
