High Point Fire District, along with auto aid partners Pageland and Sandhills Fire Departments, responded to reports of a fire at the Old Castle mulch processing facility on High Point Church Rd. Upon arrival, Engine 21 and Engine 11 found a commercial metal building with heavy smoke and visible flames.
Firefighters from Engine 21 advanced two hose lines into the structure to begin interior suppression efforts. Meanwhile, Engine 41 reversed laid and pumped 1,000 feet of 5-inch supply hose from a nearby hydrant to maintain a water supply to the scene. Crews from all departments rotated in and out of the building to manage hose lines and continue the fire attack.
Thermal imaging cameras were used to identify hidden hotspots within the structure, allowing crews to fully extinguish the fire.
Preliminary findings indicate the fire was caused by a malfunctioning machine within the facility. Intense heat from the blaze caused structural damage, including deformation of several metal roof beams. No injuries were reported.
