High Point Fire District, with auto aid partners Pageland Fire and Sandhill Fire, responded to a reported structure fire with possible entrapment on Highway 207 near Dudley Road.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a small home fully engulfed in flames. The intense fire was causing oxygen tanks within the residence to explode, sending debris across the highway. In addition, an SUV parked in front of the home was also burning.
Firefighters advanced hose lines from Engine 11 to the front door of the residence. However, as firefighters prepared to enter, the roof of the home collapsed. The engineer operating Engine 11 reported that the radiant heat was so severe it was painful even at the highway. A large winch from High Point’s ARFF truck was deployed to remove sections of the collapsed roof, allowing crews to continue extinguishing the fire and begin search efforts for potential victims.
During the incident firefighters faced additional hazards when the SUV’s gas tank ruptured, spilling burning gasoline throughout the scene. A foam mixture was used to successfully extinguish the burning fuel, and foam was also applied to the home to suppress the remaining fire in the rubble.
Tragically, firefighters located one deceased individual inside the residence. The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time and is under investigation by the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
