High Point Fire District responded Friday afternoon to the report of an overturned semi-truck with a trapped driver. Upon arrival, Engine 51 determined that the driver had exited the vehicle. The driver was evaluated by Lifeguard EMS but declined transport to the hospital.

The truck was carrying multiple tanks of agricultural chemicals on a flatbed trailer. During the crash, the tanks became dislodged from the flatbed and ruptured, causing chemicals to spill into adjacent woods and threatening nearby swamp land and a creek.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) was notified and responded to the scene to assess the environmental impact and support containment efforts.

Highway 9 was closed while emergency personnel managed the scene. Engine 51 detoured eastbound traffic onto Thompson Creek Road, while Engine 21 detoured westbound traffic onto Gum Springs Church Road.

Due to the extended time required for cleanup and roadway clearance, the SC Highway Patrol requested assistance from the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), which responded with barricades and detour signage so fire units could return to service.
