High Point Fire, Pageland Rescue, and Lifeguard EMS responded to a reported vehicle crash on Highway 207 near Mangum School Road.
Upon arrival, High Point Engine 11 found a Ford van with severe damage resting on its side. Firefighters located one occupant who had been ejected from the vehicle and another occupant who was pinned inside the van between the headrest and roof. Both individuals sustained serious injuries.
Due to the severity of the crash, firefighters requested air medical helicopters and an additional ambulance. Crews used hydraulic rescue tools from Engine 11 to cut roof supports while other firefighters stabilized the vehicle with cribbing and struts. Pageland Rescue 1 arrived and joined with rescue operations as well as assisting with patient care, while Engine 51 provided additional personnel and equipment.
After the roof supports were cut, responders used hydraulic rams to push the roof away and free the pinned patient. Responders prepared both seriously injured patients for transport to the landing zone established by Engine 31 at the Wolf Pond Baptist Church ball field.
Both patients were flown by helicopter to the trauma center at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Two additional occupants of the van were able to exit the vehicle and reported minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
